Should I give her a pacifier?

I'm really torn on the issue of my daughter having a pacifier. I have some people telling me all the negative points and others telling me all the positive points. I don't really know where I stand on the issue, I just know I don't want her to be dependent on a pacifier and I don't want her to become one of those kids that's almost five years old still walking around with a pacifier. Did/do you use a pacifier with your children? Why or why not? Is there a way to use a pacifier with limits [only during certain times, for a specific amount of time] or once I give it to her, will I always have to give it to her to soothe her?
